Like you, I’ve reinvented myself many times as I’ve worked with a wide variety of leaders in conscious companies, as well as not-so-conscious companies.
As the “Leadership Luminary”, I’ve been very successful at helping people land and retain jobs they love, work with companies they care about, and make an impact far beyond their level and title in the organization.
Along the way, I’ve seen the dramatic difference conscious and ethical leadership makes in company culture, team dynamics, and employees engagement.
My first job after college had me working for a startup as employee #2.
Within a very short time, I helped grow that organization to 30+ employees.
But unfortunately, the technology we developed (a predecessor to Zoom in the early 2000s) was way ahead of its time.
As a result, the startup failed.
However, I paid keen attention to how the team dynamics and the company culture shifted every time we added a new team member.
Especially when we started adding in layers of management and operational process.
This experience ignited my passion for leadership and team dynamics.
When an organization is that small, adding one more person to the mix has the potential to make or break an organization.
These shifts happen all the time in large organizations and big companies. In larger organizations, you may feel them at the department, team, and workgroup levels in ways more profound and possibly painful than in the organization as a whole.
After the startup ended, I went back to school and earned a Masters in Leadership and Organization Development, then I went on to Change Management Consulting and Career and Executive Coaching.
Over the years I’ve worked with people who tell me how burnt out they are and how disengaged they are from the work that they do.
They want to do something meaningful that matches their values.
And yet, there’s still something missing.
You can have one person “lit up”.
But unless the whole team, department, and/or organization is just as lit up, are you making the impact that you can achieve with the power that you have in your hands?
I’ve always been a systems-based thinker, so I ask:
How does leadership make a meaningful difference in our world, and what does it mean to be a conscious leader?
At one point, I owned a business with a mission to help reverse global warming.
I had a huge, noble vision – and I failed.
(OK, I “failed forward.”)
My small organization lacked the collective power to make a lasting difference.
I was not positioned to solve a problem that big with the setup of that organization and how it fits in with the larger problem.
Becoming a conscious leader requires a systems-based understanding of:
Younger generations are seen as being much more mission- and values-based, and they’re less engaged in organizational life than organizations need them to be – so let’s create the ripple effect that leads to self-actualization and unprecedented leadership!
Addressing this engagement gap is crucial for our collective future!
This misalignment poses significant risks for future organizational success.
If we continue on our current trajectory, we will face increasingly complex and widespread challenges; but bridging this gap is essential to prevent further disengagement and decline.
It may seem like a slow and steady decline at first; but once your organization falls too far behind the curve, it becomes incredibly difficult to regain a leading position.
I discuss this extensively in my keynote talk ‘Engage or Perish: The Infinite Impact of Conscious + Ethical Leadership.’ (Click here to learn more about my speaking topics.)
